Mass Media And The Entertainment Industry - 949 Words

How does someone define beauty? Is one’s definition of beauty what you think beauty is or is your ideal of beauty influenced by an outside force like mass media and the entertainment industry? Some believe that mass media and the entertainment industry should be responsible for causing eating disorders in young girls, while others believe differently. I believe that mass media and the entertainment industry portray beauty in a deadly way, since they establish a false image of a â€Å"perfect† woman. Others think that mass media and the entertainment industry should not be accountable for eating disorders because they argue that young individuals are held responsible for themselves. Society cannot blame something for one’s actions; therefore, people cannot blame mass media and the entertainment industry for eating disorders. God created humans with free will, so they can choose to follow or block out what they see or listen to every day. Because people can choose what they read and watch, they can decide what they want to fill their minds with. Additionally, eating disorders have existed before mass media and the entertainment industry became popular and before technology was invented. In the middle of the sixteenth century, corsets were devices used to slim the waist, but technology or magazines did not exist yet to have an influence on young girls. Media just exposes the ideals most girls want but will never admit to.
